Bring Our Daughters Back Home is an organization that demands justice in the numerous murders of women in Ciudad Juarez. As a result of their advocacy, members of this organization have been facing persecution, death threats, kidnapping, physical assaults, and murder attempts. In November 2009, Marisela’s son-in-law, Jesus Alfredo Portillo Santos, also an activist, was murdered. According to witnesses, members of the army escorted the assassins. The case has not been properly investigated. In March 2011, Marisela and her family received deaths threats and had to flee, and seek refuge in the United States. From the US, Marisela continues to coordinate efforts with the femicide victims’ families. Marisela’s advocacy focuses primarily on children of the femicide victims.Marisela will be speaking about the continuing violence, impunity, the targeted attacks to activists and the continuing activism in the midst of the situation.
